Larry's - Environment

In the late 1980s, Larry Moore of Larry’s Auto Works in Mountain View didn’t realize that the oil and gas that he washed down a storm drain flowed into creeks and then into San Francisco Bay.

But when moving his shop in 1989, Moore found there were new rules attempting to limit the practice. He was in favor of reducing pollution, but he found the new rules inconsistent and opposed to good environmental practices. Read More...

Larry’s Autoworks has a long history of protecting the environment dating back to the 1970’s. Our first formal recognition of our efforts came in 1992 when we were awarded the Clean Bay Business Certification which we helped create.

We believe a successful business is dependent on a healthy environment. We are actively working to show our environmental responsibility to our community by committing to the following objectives:

  • To comply with all applicable regulations and strive to exceed compliance
  • To conserve energy, water, materials, and other resources.
  • To develop and implement practices that prevent pollution and waste and work towards sustainability.
  • To be an environmentally responsible business with our community.

We are very conscious of the environment in all aspects of our business. Larry's AutoWorks is the only shop to receive the Susanne B. Wilson Environmental Achievement Award for businesses of less than 100 employees in Santa Clara County. We received this award in 1993 for our environmentally sound facility and practices, including creating a Zero Discharge methodology now being used by shops throughout the country. In addition, we have received many other National, State and local environmental awards and certifications, and have been a "Green Business" since the inception of the program in 1992

Larry’s AutoWorks is recognized as a Model Pollution Prevention Vehicle Service and Repair facililty by the California Environmental Protection Agency.

Larry serves on the Source Reduction Advisory Committee for the State of California, Department of Toxic Substances, Pollution Prevention Agency. He was appointed to this position in 1999 by then Governor Gray Davis. In this capacity he reviews work being done by this agency and makes recommendations for future work projects regarding source reduction of pollution in the state.

Keeping our environment safe and healthy is an important part of Larry's AutoWorks. This applies to both our daily work environment and the world environment.

Company Policy supports the recycling or reuse of as much of the paper, cardboard, plastic, metal, and glass products we handle as possible. Any suggestions to further reduce the amount of waste we produce are encouraged on a company-wide basis.

By paying attention to how we operate on a daily basis we contribute to a better world environment. Through the practices of recycling and reuse of materials we reduce the amount of waste we generate. Through the use of proper servicing methods of customer's vehicles we contribute to cleaner air and water. And through careful control of materials and fluids generated from the repair and service of vehicles we eliminate the chance of ground and water contamination.

Company Policy requires strict adherence to "Best Management Practices"in the handling and storage of onsite Hazardous Materials to assure the cleanest and safest environment possible.

We are always looking for ways to further improve our Environmental practices. Thanks to the Brake Pad Partnership results, we have confirmed that most brake pad material creates harmful copper deposits in California Waterways and the San Francisco Bay. After much research we are now able to offer an excellent non-copper alternative to our customers.

Watch Larry in an interview on Kocharhook's Channel about what happens with your vehicle oil after being replaced and how re-refined oil helps the environment.
